When children are traumatized there are always results.This is a well documented and researched truth. The brain scans of those who have been traumatized as small children are different than those children who have been in nurturing safe environments. There is no disputing the fact that these children's brains are being restructured by the trauma caused by our nation's policies. We are not responsible for what happened before they reached us, but we are responsible for what is happening to them now--no matter what we think about how they got here.

We eventually began to talk about the end of the flight, how far we had to go before we slept, who was waiting there, and so forth. She mentioned how hard it was when she arrived home from trips, because her toddler son was usually not receptive to her arrival. While she loved her job, this was wearing on her.

I chose a career path that made little sense to most. I believed in small children. I believed what happened to children in the first five years of life was the most important. I believed this long before it was proven by brain research. I also believed it because it was a truth embedded deep inside of me as a result of abuse. Without consciously knowing what happened to me in a home daycare situation at three, I subconsciously knew those years had influenced me in ways I would not understand for another forty years.
