An Exhausted Faith is a book about healing, and healing includes developing self-regulation skills. While a traumatized body cannot force itself be calm, you can care for your body in ways that help it believe peace is possible. Many suggestions for accomplishing this are throughout the book. The following is an example:

Create a Self-Regulation Space: Create a space in your home filled with the colors and objects that feel calming. It can be as simple as a chair with a side table. After my husband’s liver transplant, I transformed my very tiny office into a self-regulation corner. It has made all the difference!

When my friend Dre (McAuley Photography) came to my cottage for a photo shoot and took the following picture I am now using for my headshot, she asked where I would like to have the pictures taken. I knew. The place where I feel the most comfortable is the cottage. It was the right choice. Being comfortable in my surroundings shows in this picture!

While there, Dre enjoyed taking pictures of the space I created. It is remarkable how well the cover of An Exhausted Faith seems right at home. My space is filled with gifts from friends and family, hints of the children's literature that I enjoyed as a child, read to my preschool and kindergarten students, and shared with future teachers during my thirty-three years as a teacher educator. I appreciate Dre capturing so many things that bring me joy in this space.
